History Of Pro Wrestling Heavyweight Belt

Wrestling has a long history dating back to Ancient Mesopotamia, circa 2100 B.C. with references in "The Epic of Gilgamesh." The Bible also mentions wrestling between Jacob and an angel. The Greeks included wrestling in the Olympics.

Wrestling is an unarmed, hand-to-hand struggle with the goal of pinning your opponent's shoulders to the ground. Modern-day wrestling has largely emerged from European matches in the 1800s A.D. The French developed the amateur wrestling style, we now call "Greco-Roman." The British established the amateur wrestling style, now known as "Freestyle." The two other amateur wrestling styles are "Grappling (submission)" - which is becoming even more popular as Mixed Martial Arts - and "Sambo," developed by the Soviet Union. Professional wrestling has gained tremendous popularity with its theatrical elements including music, character development and story lines directed by American World Wrestling Entertainment and the Mexican masked acrobatics of "Lucha Libre," which means "Free Fight" in Spanish. Japan has a ritualistic wrestling tradition called "Sumo Wrestling."

Wrestling has many basic rules and concepts which overlap the amateur and professional ranks. Most of the amateur competition is at the collegiate ranks and the Olympics. The Olympics designate that an amateur must not have been "paid" for his sport. Both "Greco-Roman" and "Freestyle" wrestling share the same arena and basic rules for matches. The major difference is that "Greco-Roman" Wrestling prohibits attacks below the waist and encourages throws.

"Greco-Roman" and "Freestyle" both use a cushioned rubber mat with a nine meter diameter for the main wrestling area. The "center circle" is one meter in diameter. It includes a "red zone" (or "passivity zone") of a one meter wide band around the outer edge of the inner ring. If a wrestler is within this "passivity zone," he is described as being a non-active wrestler and can receive a warning from the referee. There is also a 1.5 meter border called the "protection area." Three two-minute periods are standard. The first wrestler to win two periods, wins the match. There is a standing phase, followed by a ground wrestling phase where the leader is given the "dominant" position. This ground position is then reversed.

Scoring is rated by the referee who gives points based on successful achievement of different moves. A "takedown" is given 1 to 5 points - 1 point for bringing opponent to stomach or side, 3 points for low level throw and 5 points for throw where opponent's feet are sent over his head. A "reversal" garners 1 point when a wrestler in an inferior position gains the dominant position. The "exposure" (danger) position - when a wrestler's shoulders are nearly pinned to the mat, when the wrestler is in a bridge, on his elbows or rolls on his shoulder is given one point. If the exposure last for five points, an additional point is awarded. If a wrestler goes "out-of-bounds" then 1 point is awarded. A "penalty" for violating rules is accessed 1 to 2 points.

A wrestler can win a period through a number of ways. A wrestler can win if he has "technical superiority," which is a six-point lead over his opponent, at any time during the period. A wrestler is given the "decision," if he has the most points in the period. When his opponent cannot continue, the wrestler wins by "default." An injured opponent gains the wrestler a victory by "injury." A wrestler can also win when by "disqualification" when his opponent has three cautions or is excessively brutal.

Grappling (submission) wrestling has gained prominence through the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) by mixing martial arts; such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with other disciplines.

Sambo Wrestling is a Russian product where the wrestler wear a jacket on his upper body. It allows leg locks but no chokes.

American Professional Wrestling is a performance art dominated by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), ["Smackdown," "Raw" and "Summer Slam" events], which was founded in 1952. It has devoured its competition including WCW (1973 - 2001) and ECW (1992 - 2001), focussing on promotions with different rules for "individual," "tag team" and "cage matches." The dramatic ring entrance, loud music, smoke and theatrical language attracts a large audience. Professional Wrestling uses a boxing ring, elevated floor with turnbuckles. Victory is achieved through five basic ways: 1.) pinning opponent's shoulder to mat for three seconds, 2.) knocking out opponent, 3.) opponent submitting, 4.) opponent is disqualified or 5.) "ten counts" outside ring. Famous wrestlers have included Andre the Giant, Hulk Hogan, The Rock and Triple H.

Mexican Professional Wrestling is called "Lucha Libre." It targets high-flying aerial moves, using wrestlers who tend to be smaller, more nimble and masked. El Santo (a symbol of justice for the poor) and Rey Mysterio are some of the most famous wrestlers.

Sumo Wrestling, believed to have developed in 16th Century Japan, involves the attempt to push the opponent out of the ring or force any of his body parts, except for his feet, to touch the ground. Sumo Wrestling includes many Shinto rituals including salt purification, communal "sumo training stables" known as "heya" and strict food and clothing rules. Present-day champion Hakuho reigns.
