Write your own Best Man Toasts
The reason a person is chosen as best man is because he is a very good friend or close relative. This being said, the best man should relax. He knows the bride and groom and should have no problem giving a speech. This is an honor; enjoy it and have fun. If the best man is still having a bit of trouble getting started, here are a few tips to follow. Brain Storm First sit down and brainstorm on the bride and groom. The best man should write down all of the things that pop into his head in the first couple of minutes, both funny and serious. The best man may know the groom better then the bride. However, he should include the bride equally in the speech. If necessary the best man can ask some of the bride’s friends for a few stories. Once all of the thoughts are down go through them and throw out anything that is too personal or unflattering. Remember this is the bride and grooms’ day, so the best man should strive to make the speech memorable and possibly funny or sentimental, but not embarrassing. And definitely do not talk about old girlfriends. Introduction Now that the best man has several thoughts, about an equal number on the bride and groom, it is time to pull them together and write the speech. At the beginning of the speech, after getting the audience’s attention, the best man should tell the audience who he is and how he knows the bride and groom. This is a good place for a quick joke or quote about marriage. Again, remember, to keep all of the jokes appropriate to both kids and the bride and grooms’ sensibilities. Don’t forget to include a thank you to those hosting the party. This is often the parents of the bride so make sure to get their names right. Check the pronunciation if unsure. Body The body of the speech is where the stories of the bride and groom come in. The best man can start with talking about the groom as a boy. An example would be “I remember when Johnny was little and told me he would never get married because girls were yucky. My, how things have changed.†Then the best man can move onto a story about how the bride and groom met. The best man can tell a funny anecdote about the couple together or individually. Remember funny not humiliating. It is a good idea to talk about how right the couple is for each other and how they have improved each others lives. A simple example would be “I have never seen Johnny happier, and Suzy just glows when she is around him.†The best man could also go for a deeper emotion, if desired. Finish To end the speech the best man should toast the bride and groom. The end could be something simple, such as “May Johnny and Suzy know many years of bliss together.†The best man could also get very sentimental at this point. One way to bring the speech to end is to use a poem. If the best man is a good writer, he can write his own, however, if not, he can find a poem in a book or on the internet. Tips Keep the speech short. This day belongs to the bride and groom, not the best man. When giving the speech, the best man should stand straight, talk loudly, and enunciate. Do not drink too much before the speech. Keep the speech age and family appropriate. One or two note-cards can be used to aid memory. The most important thing is to talk from the heart. |
